Leap Day

Saturday
 2/29/2020

This morning I went over to the temple and did some initiatory.  Brother Araujo was at the front desk.  It was fun to see the sisters who still work there, I gave lots of hugs.  When I walked in the dressing room, Sister Quintanilla was sitting in the chair, It was so fun to hug her and see her.  I enjoyed listening to the sisters as participated in initiatory and I .

Brother and Sister Quintanilla were leaving the temple as we were getting ready to go back to the tailor.  Yesterday we went to see if the tailor would have time to make Wayne a white suit to wear in the temple.  The Quintanilla's gave us a ride to the tailor in their new car.  We missed their old Volkswagen.  Wayne got the suit coat fit and was told the suit would be finished by Tuesday afternoon.  We need to have it before we leave Wednesday morning.

We ate lunch at Chili's and had a Charlie Brownie from Gelarti, and ice cream place in the mall.  It was delicious and it was nice to share it with Wayne.  We walked back to the temple and tool a few pictures along the way.

They added a new street, I think I posted about it already.
We were walking toward the temple.  the new road is to the left of Wayne.  It goes behind Manceche and connects to the road behind the Tottus mall.

This is Diego's brother and the two littlest girls belong to Diego.

When we got back to the temple, Diego's sister was getting married and I took these pictures as the family waited outside.

Huanchaco

Huanchaco
Saturday
2/28/2020
This morning, Wayne and I were able to go to the area where the temple missionaries live.  It was where we spent so much time.  Wayne played the piano and figured out how to change the program from Hymns to Christmas music.  Pedro asked him to show him how to do that again for the piano in the temple.

It was nice to be back in a space we know so well.

I took this picture out the window while Wayne was playing the piano.

The treadmill President Casos gave us missionaries for Christmas was moved upstairs.

The door to the Cocaya apartment was open, James and Whitney Fenn will be arriving today to stay here.  I took some pictures just for old time sake.

We went to the temple to show Pedro how to work the piano.
We went to the tailor to see if he would have time to make Wayne a white suit before we leave to go back to Trujillo on Wednesday.  He said he would, so Wayne gave them some money and he left his suit coat for reference and they took some measurements.  They told us to go back tomorrow so they could fit it to him.

We went to Huanchaco to have some lunch.

Trip to Trujillo

Trip to Trujillo
2/26/2020

This morning we both woke up early as usual.  When I looked out the window, I had a beautiful view of the volcano Misti.  It is usually covered with clouds, so I took a picture through our window.

We spent the day packing and getting to go to Trujillo to stay for a week while the temple in Arequipa is being cleaned.  We were'n going to go because it was expensive , but we decided about a week ago to go.

I washed the sheets, towels and cleaned the apartment.  We made sure the fridge was empty, dumped all the trash and then we watched TV as we waited for the time our flight left at 3:50 pm.

Our apartment building behind us.

Leaving the Arequipa Temple grounds

On the way to the airport, we went by some beautiful farm land.  The farm land is taken care of by the Peruvians.  I love it when I see the people, usually women, lined up going down the rows weeding or harvesting,  I think it is amazing, so neat, and so fascinating.  I got this picture as we drove past one of the fields.

This picture is of the same field further away.  A view of the houses behind.

When we arrived at the airport, I noticed these statues and had to take a picture.

Our flight plan was to fly from Arequipa to Lima at 3:50 pm. We had about an hour and a half layover in Lima before our flight to Trujillo arriving at about 8:00 pm.

We took this picture as we boarded the plane at 3:42 pm. Once everyone was on the plane, they announced we would all have to get off the plane because there were some repairs they need to make on the plane.  Oh NO!!  If this plane was delayed, we would miss our connection to Trujillo.  There was nothing we could do, so we just got off the plane and waited.  Wayne talked to one of the girls working for Latam and she said they'd put us on the next flight.  About 2 hours later, we were on the plane again to go to Lima.  We arrived in Lima at about 8:30 pm.  There were no more flights to Trujillo until the next morning at 7:00. Latam arranged for us to spend the night in a hotel that was about an hour away from the airport.  They got us a Taxi to take us to the hotel and gave us food vouchers.  We arrived at the hotel at about 10:30.  We ate dinner at that hotel, Wayne had some Pasta and Chicken and I had Lomos Saltado.  We got to bed at about midnight.  The taxi picked us up at 4:30 am to get us back to the airport.  We arrived, checked in, used our food vouchers to get us some breakfast.  When we got to our gate, we were the last ones to get on the bus that took us to the airplane.  Wahoo! finally on our way to Trujillo.

Finally on our way to Trujillo.  This is us boarding the plane at 6:53 am.  Our flight took off and we were on our way.  The flight took about an hour and 15 minutes.   When we got ready to land in Trujillo, the pilot got on the speaker and said we couldn't land because there was fog in Trujillo.  He circled around for about 30 minutes, then finally decided to fly back to Lima.  When we landed in Lima, we were getting ready to get off the plane but they told us to stay in our seats and they would put more fuel in the plane and we'd take off again for Trujillo.   It took about an hour for that to happen before we took off again.  This time we were able to land in Trujillo.  Finally!!

It is now 2/27/2020  Thursday  12:44 in the afternoon.

Wayne getting off the plane in Trujillo

Arrived in Trujillo at 12:44 pm this afternoon.

We got a Taxi and were just about 15 minutes away from the Trujillo Temple.

It was pretty neat when we got to the temple grounds. We were so happy because it felt like we were home.  It's been a year and a half since we've visited Trujillo. It was a great feeling.

When we walked into the Alberge, the first person we saw was Brother Bustamante.  He was there waiting to do his afternoon shift at the temple. Our great friend!

We got our key from Carmen and went to our matrimonial room in the temple housing.  We
went over to the temple to see Nicole, Carlos, and Pedro.  I feel bad we didn't get a picture of Carlos and Pedro.

Nicole took us down the tunnel over to the temple housing.
She got her lunch and went back to the temple.

We saw Sister Rosanna Tirado when we were at the temple and then by the commodore.

We saw Elmer, our favorite guard.  Another great friend.

We ate lunch in the commodore (lunch room) where we are staying in the temple housing.  It was just like old times.  Same tastes and flavors and it was good.

The temple grounds are beautiful!  The plants and bushes have grown.
The trees have grown the most.  It is just really pretty.

We had to go to the Mall to get some money,  pay for our stay at the temple housing and money for the taylor to make him a new suit.  When we walked out to catch a bus and noticed the flag pole had been moved to the front of the temple.  While we served our mission the flag pole was by the guard house and the gate.

Our temple housing payment.

We rode a Huanchaco bus, got some money, paid for our room.  We got a Charlie Brownie from the Galarti which was yummy then we got a taxi to take us to the tailor (Idolo Sastreria)  to see if he could make Wayne another pair of suit pants to match his suit.   The ride was a little different because they added a road, a good improvement.   Going from the temple toward the mall, it takes off by the crematorium and meets up with the road that goes behind Tottus Mall.

The tailor (sastre) didn't have any fabric like Wayne's suit.  Wayne decided to have the tailor make him a pair of grey slacks instead.  A few measurements were made, Wayne gave them some money and we were on our way again.

We wanted to go see Juan and Emma Alva and Sister Malca before the day was over,  so we got a taxi from the tailor to the Palermo chapel.  We knew how to get to the Alva's from the church, so we walked to their house from the church.

The Alva's
Jan - Rosie - Ruth -  Emma - Ruth's husband

Sister Emma Alva was surprised to see us.  We were so happy to see her.  Juan was asleep, so we visited with Emma for a while then Ruth, Emma's daughter, and her husband joined us.  We had never met them.  Rosie, Emma's youngest daughter visited with us too.  We really enjoyed our visit and Emma invited us to eat lunch with them Sunday after the Palermo Stake Conference.
We will see them again.

Sister Malca

After we left the Alva's we walked to Sister Malca's house.  She was outside watering her plants and was so surprised when she saw Wayne.  It was a sweet surprise.  We visited with her and her daughter.  We talked about her conversion and the early days of the church in Palermo.  We talked about Arequipa and the temple open house.  She showed us this picture taken at the open house in Arequipa with President Casos.  I feel bad I didn't take a picture of her.

We enjoyed our visits with wonderful friends and pioneers of the church in Palermo.  It was getting dark and we hadn't had anything dinner.  We stopped at the Tottus Mall and ate dinner at Chili's.

Back at the temple housing, we finally unpacked our stuff and settled in for our  almost week visit.
It was a great day and so nice to be back in Trujillo!
